Drone Aerial Prints & More - "Lahaina Pano"

I had just finished a real estate shoot, on Front Street, on Maui when I noticed some nice cloud formations in the sky. I sent my drone up to capture a panorama... and I'm very glad I did. This is one of my favorite aerial panoramas of Lahaina Town and West Maui.

Lahaina Banyan Tree

Lahaina Banyan Tree - Maui, Hawaii : The Lahaina Banyan Tree, on the island of Maui, is a very difficult subject to try and capture. It's sheer size presents a problem in trying to convey it's size in an image without resorting to fisheye lenses which, often, tend to distort too much. The other problem is that it's such a popular tourist attraction that it's hard to find the area not filled with people. I took this shot around midnight one night... and decided to go with a black and white format. I've photographed this tree several times, but this is my favorite shot.

I have tried to capture this Maui scene, several times, with a drone. I came close a few times, but I needed a day where everything lined up perfectly to show the incredible beauty and contrast of the sky, clouds, island, ocean, and reef. As with all worthwhile endeavors, it takes time and patience. It was a beautiful day, but I still had to make 3 flights to get this shot. The 3rd time was the one. To me, this image, finally, captured the image I have had in my mind for some time now. I can, finally, walk away from this project and let it go. This drone aerial pano, of Maui, captured a spectacular cloud formation over the island. Kaanapali is on the far left and Launiupoko is on the far right... with Lahaina Harbor in the middle. As always, a bit unnerving when flying a remote controlled drone out over the water... but shots like this one make it all worthwhile! As much as possible, I like to fly straight out and straight back for these types of shots... keeping the flight as simple as possible. This was one of my early efforts at an island wide panorama using a drone. The camera was not quite as good as state of the art cameras today... but the image is still a "keeper". Sometimes you can never quite duplicate the lighting on a given day... and on this day... it was magical. You can, clearly, see the foundation of Maui extending down into the sea floor. A unique perspective of a beautiful island on a beautiful day.

With this drone aerial shot, I wanted to try and capture a portion of the amazing reef near the Olowalu area on the Island of Maui. This image required stitching 8 separate aerial shots together in order to encompass the island and the surrounding reef.

Aerial landscape photography is like ground level landscape photography... it, often, becomes a waiting game. Unlike studio photography, where we can light everything, exactly, as we want... landscape photography requires that we, simply, work with the lighting that is present at a given moment in time... or wait for it to change. I had almost put my drone away for the day because I thought the lighting was just not going to be favorable... but I decided to try for one last flight. Overcast days can be deceptive. The subtle play of clouds and shadow can actually create a beautiful scene. The shadows across the water and the island created a very unique view of Maui on this day.

I've shot Maui, from this angle, a few times... but I think this panorama was shot on the most beautiful day. The clouds, the lighting, and the ocean were just about perfect. I had to make a few trips to this location to, finally, catch the drone aerial image that I had in mind. The Nakalele Blowhole has been photographed thousands of times from the land side, but I had never seen a low level aerial, from the ocean side, with the blowhole erupting and waves crashing around it. It seemed like each time I visited the area something was not right... bad lighting, no waves, no geyser... something. I, finally, managed to catch a perfect day when all the elements I wanted were present. Even so, I had to hover my drone, in one spot, for over 20 minutes to finally catch the scene I wanted. You can see the relative size of the geyser by the people standing around it.

Hawaii drone photography - I've been flying drones for quite a while now. I've learned, over the years, that "higher" is not, necessarily, better when it comes to aerial photography. The unique ability, of drones, is to get "low level" aerial shots that, often, are more interesting than high altitude views. This low altitude shot, of Lahaina Harbor, offers a unique perspective that allows one to see a lot of interesting detail.

I hadn't plan to photograph a sunset on this particular evening. My buddy and I had gone to a place call "Sharkpit", on Maui, to try and photograph some palm trees. I had, pretty much, got what I wanted and started to leave. My friend looked toward the setting sun and suggested we stay a bit longer. I a few minutes, I was looking at one of the most beautiful and unique sunsets I had ever seen in Hawaii. The water, near the shore, was unusually calm which allowed for cloud reflections that normally are not seen in the restless waters around Maui. I've been in Hawaii over 25 years now, and this remains one of my favorite sunset shots.
