The Ahihi Kinau Natural Area Reserve encompasses the youngest lava flow on the Island of Maui. The "King's Highway Trail" traverses this lava flow and offers incredible ocean and mountain views. This was one of those days where I got started on an adventure, with my drone, that I had not anticipated. The conditions, for this hike, can be very hot... and always rocky which makes for tricky footing. If you do this hike, be sure to bring plenty of sun protection, extra water, and sturdy footwear. It was a challenging hike while backpacking a drone... but this panorama was worth it. This print is available in a 12x24 size... either on stretched canvas or glossy metal.
The Hoapili Trail winds through areas of lush green vegetation before heading off into barren lava fields. This unique vertical panorama captures the green mountains above this coastal trail... with the terrain descending down until it meets the emerald waters of La Perouse Bay. Available in a special 12x24 size as either a stretched canvas or glossy print on metal.
The Ae'o (Hawaiian Stilt) can be a difficult bird to photograph. This is one subject where the use of a drone is no help at all! This shot was taken with a Canon 500mm f/4 lens. It's skittish nature and the fact that it is usually wading in, difficult to reach, marsh areas... makes a sharp, clean photo a challenge. Also, I've found the lighting angle has to be "just right" to show off this bird's red eye. This is one of my favorite image of the unique bird.
